1771 பேரை இனப்படுகொலை செய்ததற்காக குவாத்தமாலா இராணுவத் தளபதிக்கு 80 ஆண்டுகள் சிறை.

மத்திய அமெரிக்க நாடான குவாத்தமாலாவில் 1982-83 காலப் பகுதியில்.. அந்த நாட்டின் பூர்வீக மக்களான மாயன்களுக்கு எதிரான உள்நாட்டுப் போரில்.. அப்போதைய இராணுவத் தளபதியாக இருந்த.. Efrain Rios Montt.. சிறீலங்காவின் கோத்த பாய.. சரத் பொன்சேகா கணக்கில் இராணுவத்தை ஏவிவிட்டு.. பாலியல் சித்திரவதைகள்.. சித்திரவதைகள்... படுகொலைகள்... இடம்பெயர்வுகள் மூலம் அரசுக்கு எதிராக போராடிய இடதுசாரி பூர்வீக மக்கள் இயக்க ஆதரவாளர்கள்  எனச் சந்தேகிக்கப்படும்.. 1771 பேரை இனப்படுகொலையை செய்ததற்காக.. அந்த நாட்டு நீதிமன்றம்.. இப்போதுதான் 80 ஆண்டுகாலச் சிறைத் தண்டனை அளித்துள்ளது. மேற்படி இராணுவத் தளபதிக்கு வயசு 86 ஆகும்.

மேற்படி நாட்டில் 1960 - 1996 வரையான.. உள்நாட்டுப் போரில் சுமார் 200,000 நிலப்பூர்வீக மக்களான மாயன்களை அரசு இராணுவத்தை ஏவிக் கொன்று குவித்தமை இங்கு சுட்டிக்காட்டத்தக்கது.




இவருக்கு காலம் கடத்தி அளிக்கப்பட்ட இந்த தீர்ப்பை இட்டு.. குவாத்தமாலாவில் வாழும்.. மாயன் பூர்வ வழி மக்கள் பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி வெளியிட்டுள்ளனர்.

1771 பேரைக் கொன்றதிற்கே இனப்படுகொலை (genocide) தீர்ப்பளிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கு என்றால் சிறீலங்காவில் தமிழர்களை பல ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக கொன்று குவித்த.. ஜே ஆர்.. பிரேமதாச.. டிபி விஜேதுங்க.. சந்திரிக்கா.. ரணில்.. மகிந்த உட்பட்ட சிங்கள அரசுத் தலைவர்களும்.. அவர்கள் ஏவிவிட்ட இராணுவத் தளபதிகளும்.. ஒட்டுக்குழு தலைவர்களும் சிறீலங்காவில் இனப்படுகொலைக் குற்றவாளிகள் என்பது மிகத் தெளிவாகிறது..! மேலும் ராஜீவ் காந்தி உள்ளிட்டவர்கள் மீதும்... இந்திய படை அதிகாரிகள் மீதும் இதே குற்றச்சாட்டின் கீழ் தண்டனை வழங்க முடியும்.

அந்த வகையில் தமிழ் மக்கள் இந்த வழக்கை ஒரு முன்மாதிரியாகக் கொண்டு.. இந்தளவு கால நீட்சிக்கு இடமளிக்காமல்.. சர்வதேச நீதிவிசாரணை ஒன்றின் மூலம்.. தமிழினப் படுகொலையாளர்களை தண்டிக்க கூடிய  முயற்சிகளை சீக்கிரம்.. ஓய்வில்லாமல்.. தொய்வில்லாமல்.. முடுக்கிவிட இந்த வழக்கு முடிவு நல்ல ஒரு உதாரணமாக அமைகிறது..!

A court in Guatemala has found former military leader Efrain Rios Montt guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity.
A three-judge tribunal sentenced the 86-year-old to 80 years in prison.

Rios Montt was convicted of ordering the deaths of 1,771 people of the Ixil Maya ethnic group during his time in office in 1982 and 1983.

When the Guatemalan Peace Accords were signed in 1996 after a civil war in which 200,000 people were killed, very few ever thought this moment would be reached.

In blisteringly critical language, Judge Jazmin Barrios said that as de facto president it was logical that Rios Montt knew of what was happening in the country, but did nothing to stop it.

Hunger, systematic rape and forced displacements were all used as tools of war against the Ixil people for whom merely being a member of the indigenous group was a "mortal offence" in the military government's brutal pursuit of left-wing guerrillas.

Judge Barrios's summary and subsequent sentencing of Rios Montt was everything that human rights organisations and victims' families' groups in Central America had been hoping to hear for decades. Now the 86-year-old former general is facing the rest of his life in prison, though he is almost certain to appeal on the grounds of his age.

Survivors described horrific abuses committed by the army against those suspected of aiding left-wing rebels.
